Syzygium cumini big fruit
Big-fruited jamun
- Also called Big jamun, Ram jamun, Large-fruited jamun
- Tamil Naval (நாவல்)
- Hindi Jamun (जामुन), large types sold as Ram jamun or Ra jamun
- Telugu Neredu (నేరేడు)
Evergreen tree, up to 30 m
What it is
This is the same jamun tree as the common type, grown from a line that bears larger, fleshier fruit. The fruits are oblong and ripen deep purple to bluish-black, with more pulp around the seed. Jamun seed often grows true to its parent, because one seed can hold several embryos that copy the mother tree, so large-fruited lines can be kept going from seed. The species is native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia.
What it's used for
- The bigger, juicier fruit is good for eating fresh and for juice, jam and squash.
- Like all jamun, its flowers feed bees and its fruit feeds birds and bats.
- The tree gives the same deep shade and water-resistant wood as the common type.
